Police in Embalenhle have opened an inquest docket following a drowning incident that occurred on Sunday, 26 April 2026, at about 10:00 at Wellas River behind Ext 22, Embalenhle.
It is reported that a church leader, accompanied by members of the congregation, had gathered at the river for prayer. During the course of their activities, a 59-year-old woman and two teenagers (17 and 19) entered the water for the purpose of baptism.
While they were in the river, the group noticed that the water level was rising. It is alleged that the adult female lost her footing and attempted to regain balance by holding onto the two teenagers. Unfortunately, all three individuals lost stability and submerged in the water.
The church leader attempted to rescue the victims but was unsuccessful.
The incident was reported to the police, who responded promptly. The SAPS Search and Rescue team was summoned to the scene, and the bodies of all three victims were recovered. They were all declared deceased at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are underway.
